Pengertian Determiner serta Fungsinya

    Determiner adalah kata yang ditempatkan di depan kata benda (noun) untuk memberikan informasi lebih spesifik tentang kata benda tersebut, seperti kepemilikan, jumlah, atau identitas. Determiner tidak berdiri sendiri; selalu diikuti oleh noun (kata benda) atau noun phrase (kumpulan beberapa kata yang menjadi 1 sebagai kata benda).

1. Fungsi Determiner

Determiner memiliki beberapa fungsi utama:

a. Menentukan kepastian atau ketidakpastian suatu benda

Contoh: a book (sebuah buku — tidak spesifik)

Contoh: the book (buku itu — spesifik)

b. Menunjukkan jumlah atau kuantitas

Contoh: some apples, many people, few cars

c. Menunjukkan kepemilikan

Contoh: my bag, their house, John’s pen

d. Menunjukkan kata benda secara spesifik

Contoh: this chair, those shoes

2. Jenis-jenis Determiner

a. Articles

a / an → untuk benda tunggal yang tidak spesifik.

a cat → seekor kucing (umum)

the → untuk benda yang spesifik.

• the cat on the roof → kucing tertentu di atap

b. Demonstratives (Penunjuk)

this, that, these, those

• this book → buku ini
• those cars → mobil-mobil itu

c. Possessives (Kepemilikan)

my, your, his, her, its, our, their

• my house → rumahku

d. Quantifiers (Penunjuk jumlah / kuantitas)

some, any, many, few, several, all, every

• many people → banyak orang
• few students → beberapa siswa

e. Numbers (Angka sebagai determiner)

• Two cats
• Ten books

f. Interrogatives (Pertanyaan)

which, what, whose

• Which book do you want?
• Whose pen is this?

g. Distributives (Membagi / mendistribusi)

each, every, either, neither

• Each student got a gift.

* Beberapa determiner bisa muncul bersamaan, tapi ada aturan urutan tertentu seperti pada contoh :

• all my friends (quantifier + possessive + noun)
