A. Degree of Comparison

    Yang dimaksud dengan Degree of Comparison adalah bentuk Adjective (kata sifat) yang menyatakan tingkatan perbandingan. Degree of Comparison sendiri terbagi menjadi 3 klasifikasi :

• Positive Degree (bentuk dasar yang setara)
• Comparative Degree (perbandingan 2 hal)
• Superlative Degree (perbandingan lebih dari 2 hal)

    Berikut ini penjelasan lebih rincinya beserta contoh-contohnya;

Short Vowel (Consonant - Vowel - Consonant)

    Tersusun dari huruf konsonan - vokal - konsonan

• Positive : Wet, Big
• Comparative : Wetter, Bigger
• Superlative : Wettest, Biggest

Double Vowels / Consonants

    Diakhiri dengan 2 huruf vokal atau 2 konsonan

• Positive : Clean, Long
• Comparative : Cleaner, Longer
• Superlative : Cleanest, Longest

Kata berakhiran -e

• Positive : Nice, Simple
• Comparative : Nicer, Simpler
• Superlative : Simplest

Kata berakhiran -y

• Positive : Early, Pretty
• Comparative : Earlier, Prettier
• Superlative : Earliest, Prettiest

Kata berakhiran -ful, -ing dan -ed

• Positive : Useful, Boring, Tired
• Comparative : More useful, More boring, More tired
• Superlative : Most useful, Most boring, Most tired

Kata dengan 3 atau lebih suku kata

• Positive : Ex/pen/sive, Com/for/ta/ble
• Comparative : More expensive, More comfortable
• Superlative : Most expensive, Most comfortable

B. Pengecualian

    Sebagian kata ada yang tidak memiliki bentuk yang beraturan (Irregular); dengan kata lain tidak mengikuti kaidah diatas, akan tetapi menggunakan kata yang berbeda dari bentuk asalnya.

C. Rumus Degree of Comparison

    Adapun rumus susunan kalimat Degree of Comparison adalah sebagaimana berikut;

- Positive Degree

1. Rumus umum :

S + To be + adjective/adverb

• She is smart
• He runs fast

2. Rumus kesetaraan :

S + to be + as + adjective/adverb + as + O

• Desi is as diligent as Ratih (Desi sama rajinnya dengan Ratih)
• I'm as happy as Roy (Saya sama senangnya dengan Roy)
• She is as smart as her sister
• He runs as fast as me
• She dances as beautifully as you (Dia menari seindah kamu)

- Comparative Degree

1. Adjective pendek (1 suku kata / 2 suku kata tertentu)

S + to be + adjective-er + than + O

• He is taller than me
• Sinta is older than Riska
• This book is cheaper than that one 

2. Adjective panjang (2 suku kata / lebih)

S + to be + more + adjective + than + o

• The movie is more interesting than the other one
• She is more careful than her brother
• Shomad is more handsome than Rizky

3. Comparative dengan Adverb

S + verb + adverb-er/ more + adverb + than + o

• He runs faster than me
• He walks more slowly than you
• She speaks more clearly than him

- Superlative Degree

1. Adjective pendek

S + to be + the + adjective-est + (noun)

• He is the tallest student in the class
• This is the cheapest phone 

2. Adjective panjang

S + to be + the + most + adjective + (noun)

• She is the most intelligent student
• That was the most difficult exam 

3. Superlative dengan Adverb

S + verb + the + adverb-est / most + adverb

• He runs the fastest
• She speaks the most fluently
• Ani cooks the most skilfully
