Penjelasan Mudah Yes-No Question

    Setelah sebelumnya kita belajar beberapa pelajaran bahasa Inggris; sekarang kita memasuki materi seputar Yes-No Question. Singkatnya; Yes-No Question adalah jenis kalimat tanya dalam bahasa Inggris yang jawabannya cukup dengan 'Yes' atau 'No', sebetulnya konteks Yes-No Question ini bisa kita pahami sebagai Interrogative Sentence yang sempat mimin contohkan pada artikel yang sudah lalu. Secara struktur penggunaannya; konsep Yes-No Question ini dibagi menjadi 5 klasifikasi sebagaimana berikut :

1. To be Verb

    To be digunakan untuk yes-no question yang berkaitan dengan kata sifat, benda atau profesi. Bisa juga dipakai untuk kalimat yang menggunakan Verb berakhiran -ing. Contoh;

• Are you a student? (Apakah kamu seorang siswa?)
• Are you waiting for Dito? (Apakah kamu sedang menunggu Dito?)
• Were they late?
• Are you ready?
• Is he your brother?

Jawaban Singkat (Short Answer)

Yes : Yes, they are / Yes, he was / Yes, they were

No : No, they aren't / No, he wasn't / No, they weren't

NOTE :

• Is = She, He, It (Present)
• Am = I (Present)
• Are = They, We, You (Present)
• Was = She, He, It (Past)
• Were = They, We, You (Past)

2. To do / Auxiliary Verb

    Sedangkan To do dipakai khusus untuk yes-no question pada kalimat Simple Tenses yang berhubungan dengan Verb. Contohnya seperti pada kalimat;

• Do you like vanilla ice cream? (Apakah kamu suka es krim vanila?)
• Does she live here?
• Did they finish the work?
• Did she call you?

Jawaban Singkat (Short Answer)

Yes : Yes, I do / Yes, she did / Yes, they are / Yes he was

No : No, I don't / No she didn't / No, they aren't / No, he wasn't

NOTE :

• Do = They, We, I (Present)
• Does = She, We, It (Present)
• Did = Semua subjek (Past)
• Subjek menyesuaikan (I, you, he, she, they)
• Dalam konteks formal bentuk panjang boleh dipakai (do not, is not, has not)
• Verb utama tidak diulang (Yes I do)

3. To have / Perfect Tenses

    To have digunakan untuk yes-no question pada kalimat Perfect Tenses atau kejadian yang sudah terjadi. Adapun contohnya bisa temen-temen lihat pada kalimat di bawah ini;

• Have you ever seen a ghost? (Apakah kamu sudah pernah melihat hantu?)
• Has he eaten?
• Has he finished his homework?
• Had they left before you arrived?

Jawaban Singkat (Short Answer)

Yes : Yes, they had / Yes, I have / Yes, I will have / Yes, she will have

No : No, they hadn't / No I haven't / No, I won't have / No, she won't have

NOTE :

• Selalu gunakan Verb 3; walaupun berbentuk kalimat tanya
• Have = They, We, I, You (Present Perfect)
• Has = She, He, It (Present Perfect)
• Had = Semua subjek (Past Perfect)
• Bentuk singkat (haven't, hadn't, won't have) lazim dipakai dalam konteks informal
• Verb 3 tidak diulang dalam Short Answer

4. Modal Auxiliary

    Modal Auxiliary Verb juga bisa digunakan untuk Yes-No Question seperti pada contoh di bawah ini;

• Can your father speak English well? (Bisakah ayahmu berbicara Inggris dengan baik?) [Present]
• Could you contact Kate last night? (Bisakah anda menghubungi Kate tadi malam?) [Past]
• Should we stop now?
• Will she come tomorrow?
• Can you help me?
• Must we submit the report today?
• Shall we start now?
• Should I call him?
• Would you like some coffee?
• May I leave nearly?
• Shall we start the meeting?
• Might it rain tonight?

Jawaban Singkat (Short Answer)

Yes : Yes, I can / Yes, we should / Yes, you may / Yes, he might / Yes, we must

No : No, I can't / No, we shouldn't / No, you may not / No, he might not / No, we must not

NOTE :

• Semua Modal Auxiliary bisa dipakai untuk semua subjek tanpa ada pembagian khusus
• Main Verb (Kata kerja utama) yang dipakai selalu dalam bentuk Verb 1; meskipun Modalnya bentuk lampau (could, would, might, should, had to [gantinya have to])
• Modal Verb meliputi : can, could, will, would, should, may, might, must, shall, have to

5. Passive Voice

    Yes-No Question juga bisa diterapkan pada kalimat berbentuk Passive Voice. Rumus utamanya adalah Be + S + Verb-3 .... ?

• Is the door locked?
• Was the letter sent?
• Has the work been completed?
• Are the rooms cleaned every day?
• Was the letter sent yesterday?
• Were the tickets sold?
• Has the work been finished?
• Have the documents been signed?
• Will the project be completed on time?
• Will the room be cleaned tomorrow?
• Can this problem be solved?
• Should the rules be followed?

Jawaban singkat (Short Answer)

Yes : Yes, it is / Yes, they were / Yes, it has been

No : No, it isn't / No, they weren't / No, it hasn't been
